As summer approaches and many have a bit more time to relax, some of you are going to start journeys in finally getting around to that book you’ve been wanting to write. And for that, I commend you. But this is no easy task, and it’s not something you can do if you don’t commit to as you would a full-time job. Writing a book takes sacrifice. The question you must as yourself is: how much am I willing to give to finish my story? Once you answer that, the rest will become clearer, but for now, let me assist you in crushing your writing goals.
One of the first things I recommend as a new writer, or even a seasoned one, is to set a daily schedule for writing. Write for at least thirty minutes a day, but an hour is preferable. If you can do more, do more, but realize you MUST write every day. When you start this habitual track record with yourself, you build confidence in your craft and become more disciplined.
Two goes into sacrifice. Many of us have jobs, families, and other responsibilities that may tie us up throughout the day, but it’s crucial you set time aside to write that book. No excuses. Get up thirty minutes to an hour earlier, or stay up an hour later. Pick whichever one works best for you.
Three is all about exercise. Any kind of exercise will do. Just make sure you get that heart pumping and that blood flowing. A healthy body equals a healthy mind. When you feel better physically, you’ll feel better mentally. This duality will create a mindset that anything is possible, and overall, you’ll feel more motivated to write when the time comes. Again, you are creating a habitual track record with yourself that will allow you to believe in yourself, build confidence and discipline.
Four score, read more. Reading is essential for any author and/or writer. If you want to write a memoir, read a memoir from someone you want to know more about if they have one. If you want to write fantasy, go pick up a fantasy novel. It’s both research and entertainment. Reading will give you a glimpse of how other writers handle certain situations in their books, and it’ll increase your writing IQ so you don’t make beginner mistakes that will make your story predictable trash. All you need is ten minutes a day. Just pick up a book and glue your eyes to it!
Five! WooSah! Create an enjoyable workspace for yourself. Make your office, kitchen table, porch, wherever, a place of peace. Put pictures on the walls, have quotes from your favorite writers, actors, or characters posted. Put up your past achievements so you, when you pause for a moment to look around, you see that you’re capable of accomplishing a difficult task. Having an enjoyable, CLEAN workspace will bring you inner peace and make you happier, which in turn will help your creative juices flow. Set the mood for yourself. Burn an incense. And enjoy.
I hope these tips help someone. Have a great Mother’s Day weekend.
